Live Like a Local: Best sunrise and sunset spots in Mount Maunganui

Low tide reflections beside Mauao at Marine Parade Beach Mount Maunganui during early morning light

A local photographer’s guide to the best sunrise, sunset and moonrise viewing locations in Mount Maunganui, including seasonal alignment tips and easy-access spots for families.

One of the things that makes Mount Maunganui special is that you can watch the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean and set across the harbour in the same day.

At the time of writing, Mauao is still closed following the January 2025 landslides. I’ve intentionally included plenty of other beautiful sunrise and sunset locations around the Mount so you can still experience the best light here while the track’s being restored.

I’ve spent years documenting the coast here and watching how sunrise, sunset and moonrise shift through the seasons. And I can tell you, the local secret no one’s talking about is that the best viewing spots change throughout the year.

Some locations come into their own in winter but feel average in summer. Others line up for a few short weeks. In some cases, the difference between an average sunrise and an unforgettable one simply comes down to arriving earlier than you expected.

Most mornings I arrive about 45 minutes before sunrise. That gives me enough light to walk safely, read the clouds, and decide whether colour’s going to build or disappear.

Sunrise has always been my quiet, meditative space before the day begins. Sometimes I’m there alone. Sometimes I’m photographing families or campaigns. Sunrise is one of the ways I regulate my nervous system. That quiet time before everything starts moving helps me feel ready for the day ahead.

Quick jump guide:

Choose your sunrise spot fast: a quick reference guide

Not every sunrise needs a hike. Here’s a quick way to decide where to go depending on the kind of morning you’re after.

If it’s your first visit → Main Beach

If you’re heading out with kids → Tay Street Beach

If you want reflections and foreground detail → Moturiki Island

If you’re looking for somewhere quieter → Papamoa Beach

If you want a panoramic sunrise mission → Mauao summit (when open)

If you’re on the other side of the bridge → Kulim Park

If conditions are uncertain → your nearest beach access usually works well

Early morning sunrise scenes around Mount Maunganui including coastal viewpoints, beach reflections and shoreline walks

Different sunrise spots at the Mount offer completely different experiences, from elevated lookouts to calm shoreline reflections.

Best sunrise spots in Mount Maunganui

Sunrise always happens over the ocean here, but where it appears along the horizon shifts through the year. Even small seasonal changes can completely change how dramatic the light feels.

Main Beach

Best for: first time visitors, moonrise photography, flexible shoreline compositions

About: Main Beach is the easiest place to start if you’re not sure what conditions are going to do that morning. The wide open shoreline gives you flexibility to move north or south depending on where the light appears around the islands and rocky outcrops.

Leisure Island offers some fun composition options from sea level, and it can create beautiful filtered light just after sunrise as the sun clears the rocks if you’re photographing surfers at Main Beach.

Accessibility: Very easy with multiple flat access points, parking on the roadside.

Best time of year: Year round, with autumn often producing strong colour about 20 minutes before sunrise. Winter light is crisp and clear. Summer tones are softer and more pastel.

Local tip: For low tide reflections, I usually keep walking toward the rocks beyond Moturiki/Leisure Island where the beach profile flattens and reflections become more consistent.

Moturiki Island (Leisure Island)

Sunrise over Moturiki Island at Mount Maunganui with layered waves and offshore rocks creating foreground detail

Moturiki Island creates one of the Mount’s strongest sunrise foreground compositions, especially when small swells wrap around the outer rocks.

Best for: rocks, visual interest, light filtering

About: Moturiki adds visual interest to sunrise images with rocks and tidal pools.

I normally shoot from the outer rocks near the start of the island, looking back down the shoreline rather than standing at the far end. That angle gives much stronger depth through the frame.

It’s also one of my favourite places locally to photograph moonrise when the full moon lifts over Maketū Peninsula (roughly May to September).

Accessibility: Short easy walk, plenty of parking nearby but gets busy in the summer. Sometimes inaccessible during king tides or large swells

Best time of year: Sunrise works year round, moonrise alignment is strongest May to September.

Local tip: Still mornings often leave reflective tidal pools between the rocks.

Tay Street Beach

Sunrise surfer at Tay Street Beach Mount Maunganui with early morning light over the Pacific Ocean

Sunrise at Tay Street Beach is one of the easiest early-morning spots at the Mount, especially with kids or slower starts to the day. This photo was taken at Tay Street in mid autumn.

Best for: families, reliable reflections, relaxed sunrise routines

About: Tay Street Beach is one of the best sunrise locations locally. It works especially well if you’re heading out with kids or just want a slower start to the day.

At low tide, the water recedes far enough to create expansive reflective surfaces both toward the horizon and back toward Mauao once the mountain catches early light. It’s one of my personal safe default sunrise spots.

Accessibility: Very easy, lots of parking on the roadside with a toilet/changing block. For pram-friendly or disabled access, head slightly further towards the mount at the beach access in front of Cutters Cove.

Best time of year: Best year round, low tide is something special!

Local tip: I nearly always shoot from sea level here. The reflections across wet sand are what make this location special. However, you can enjoy from the grass bank above the beach which has benches or firm ground to set up a tripod. Once the sun’s well and truly up, it’s an easy walk to coffee at Tay Street Store across the road, one of my fave cafes in Mount Maunganui.

Kulim Park / Ōtūmoetai Waterfront

Best for: calm harbour reflections, sheltered winter mornings

About: Kulim Park offers a quieter alternative to ocean facing sunrise. Winter mornings especially can produce glassy reflections across the harbour with lovely views of Mauao.

It’s a great backup when Main Beach feels exposed or windy or you want some visual interest in your photo composition.

Accessibility: Extremely easy. Lots of parking and flat walking paths.

Best time of year: Great year-round but autumn and winter deliver some stunning colours.

Local tip: Best on still mornings when the harbour surface stays mirror-like. Or try a slow shutter on windy mornings when the water is churned up!

Papamoa Beach

Mid summer sunrise over Papamoa Beach near Mount Maunganui with open horizon coastline and morning mist

With extensive sand dunes, and a laid back lifestyle, Papamoa Beach offers a dreamy landscape to photograph or just be present in. This photo was taken in mid summer, as you can see the sun rises over the land during this time rather than over the ocean.

Best for: strong autumn and winter colour, quiet open horizons

About: Papamoa Beach often produces deeper sunrise colour than Main Beach through the cooler months. The coastline feels more open and expansive without Rabbit Island or Moturiki interrupting the horizon line.

I usually shoot around Papamoa Domain, although the sunrise quality stays consistent along most of this stretch.

Accessibility: Papamoa Domain is super easy to access with a car park leading almost immediately onto the beach (great for families!). Or explore accesses along the coast through the dunes.

Best time of year: March through August offers the strongest colour, in mid-summer the sunrise appears over the land and not the water.

Local tip: This location’s less about foreground composition and more about horizon clarity and sky colour.

Mauao Summit (currently closed)

Sunrise view from Mauao summit Mount Maunganui looking across the Bay of Plenty coastline and harbour entrance

From the summit of Mauao you can watch the sun rise over the Pacific and trace the coastline south along the Bay of Plenty. This photo was taken in the mid summer. During the winter, the sun rises out of frame to the left, looking out over open ocean.

Best for: panoramic sunrise missions

About: When it’s open again, the summit of Mauao offers the most expansive sunrise viewpoint locally with views across the ocean, harbour, Coromandel coastline to the North, Bay of Plenty coastline to the south and offshore islands including Mayor Island (Tuhua), Motiti Island, and even Whakaari/White Island active volcano on a clear day.

Climbing with camera gear turns it into a completely different experience from a casual walk.

If Mauao is open again when you visit, I usually start climbing about 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise. If it’s your first time, allow closer to an hour.

Accessibility: Moderate hike, allow 20 to 25 minutes if you’re used to the track, or allow up to an hour if it’s your first climb. For sunrise, I usually take the stair track straight up from the Mount base near the surf club. It’s steeper but faster, and you get ever-changing blue hour views as you climb.

Best time of year: Especially strong in winter clarity

Local tip: Bring a torch for the first section of the track before dawn, and an extra layer in winter since it can get cool at the top even just waiting a few minutes for sunrise.

Choose your sunset spot fast: a quick reference guide

Not every sunset needs a hill climb. Here’s a quick way to decide where to go depending on the kind of evening you’re after.

If it’s your first visit → Pilot Bay

If you want the classic Mount silhouette → Hart Street Beach

If you’re after seasonal Mauao alignment → Moturiki Island (mid-winter)

If you want panoramic harbour views → Mauao summit (when open)

If you prefer somewhere elevated but with takeout → Mount Drury

If you want elevated golden light over the coastline → Papamoa Hills Regional Park

If conditions are uncertain → anywhere along the harbour side usually works well

Evening sunset scenes around Mount Maunganui including beach reflections, ocean horizon views and Mauao silhouette light

Sunset locations around the Mount range from open ocean horizons to classic Mauao silhouette views along the beach.

Best sunset spots in Mount Maunganui

Because Mount Maunganui faces east toward the Pacific, the strongest sunsets happen along the harbour side of the peninsula. In winter, you can actually watch the sun set beside Mauao from several east coast locations that don’t work at all during summer.

Pilot Bay

Sunset over Pilot Bay Mount Maunganui with boats reflecting evening light across Tauranga Harbour

Pilot Bay is the Mount’s most reliable sunset spot, especially on calm evenings when the harbour holds colour long after the sun drops.

Best for: reliable year round sunsets, calm reflections

About: Pilot Bay is the Mount’s most dependable sunset location. Calm harbour water often reflects colour long after the sun drops below the horizon.

It’s where evening routines unfold. People swim, walk, share takeaway dinners, or just sit along the shoreline watching the light change.

Accessibility: Extremely easy

Best time of year: Year round, best during easterly wind conditions and summer evenings.

Local tip: Set up for the evening, get a take-out, a rug, a few beach toys and enjoy the calm waters. If you’re up for it, the Sauna Project operates here. It’s one of my fave sunset sauna spots!

Mount Drury

Best for: easy elevated sunset views, families, relaxed evening picnics

About: Mount Drury is one of the easiest places in Mount Maunganui to get elevation for sunset without committing to a longer walk. From the top you can look across Pilot Bay, the harbour entrance, and back toward Mauao as the light fades across the water.

It’s an especially good option while Mauao remains closed, and it works really well if you’re visiting with kids or just want a slower evening plan rather than a proper hike.

There are two picnic benches at the top, which makes this one of the most underrated sunset dinner spots at the Mount.

Accessibility

Short walk from the base, suitable for most fitness levels and families

Best time of year: October to March (Mauao obstructs the view in autumn and winter months)

Local tip: Grab takeaway from Mount Fish & Chips and walk it up to the top for a glorious summer sunset. It’s one of the easiest relaxed evening setups locally.

Mauao Summit (currently closed)

Sunset view from Mauao summit Mount Maunganui looking across Tauranga Harbour toward the Kaimai Range

From the summit of Mauao you can watch the sun drop behind the Kaimai Range as the harbour and coastline catch the last light.

Best for: panoramic harbour and coastline sunset views

About: When open, the summit of Mauao is one of the most dramatic sunset viewpoints in Mount Maunganui. From the top you can watch the sun drop over the Kaimai Range while Matakana Island and the harbour entrance catch the last of the evening light.

Winter sunsets are especially strong from here because the sun sets further north along the horizon.

Even though the track is currently closed following the January 2025 landslides, it’s still one of the most iconic sunset experiences at the Mount and worth planning for once access returns.

Accessibility: Moderate hike, allow 30 to 45 minutes to reach the summit

Best time of year: Beautiful year round. From summer solstice through to winter solstice the alignment slowly shifts across the harbour, which makes each season feel slightly different from the top.

Local tip: Stay a little longer after sunset. The expansive western sky often holds colour well after the sun disappears.

Moturiki Island (winter alignment)

Winter sunset alignment beside Mauao from Moturiki Island Mount Maunganui

In mid winter the sun sets beside Mauao from Moturiki Island, one of the Mount’s most photogenic seasonal alignments in my honest opinion!

Best for: seasonal Mauao alignment sunsets

About: Seasonal sunset alignment happens mid winter looking back towards Mauao (the Mount) where you’ll see it dropping over the eastern side of the mountain. It’s one of the Mount’s most photogenic seasonal alignments, and comes into it’s own when there’s swell and the surfers are out at Main Beach.

Accessibility: Short easy walk

Best time of year: May through August

Local tip: While seeing the actual sun set is best in winter at this sunset spot, it’s also so stunning in the summer when the sun is on the far western side but casts pastel pinks and purples across the sky beyond Leisure Island. I love a balmy bay swim at this time.

Hart Street Beach

Sunset beside Mauao from Hart Street Beach Mount Maunganui during winter alignment

Between May and July the sun sets beside Mauao from Hart Street Beach, although pastel evening colour lingers here year round.

Best for: quiet winter alignment sunsets

About: Hart Street Beach is a lesser known stretch where the sun sets beside Mauao between roughly May and July.

Most visitors don’t realise this alignment even exists.

Accessibility: Easy roadside access

Best time of year: May through July

Local tip: Head down to the end of any of the beach accesses in this vicinity and look back towards Mauao, you should be able to capture the sun setting over the dunes with the Mount in the right side of the composition. Especially cool from the water if you are getting into water photography.

Papamoa Hills Regional Park

Sunset view toward Mount Maunganui from Papamoa Hills Regional Park across the Bay of Plenty coastline

Papamoa Hills Regional Park offers one of the widest sunset viewpoints near Mount Maunganui, with sweeping views across the coastline and harbour entrance.

Best for: elevated golden hour panoramas

About: Papamoa Hills Regional Park offers wide views across the Bay of Plenty coastline and harbour entrance.

Accessibility: Moderate uphill walk

Best time of year: Year round

Local tip: Bring a headlamp if you’re staying after sunset to guide your way back down the hills. Bonus local tip, access the summit from Summer Hills car park and walk the back way in if climbing the hills is too much for you, this is a far more gentle undulating walk through paddocks.

Best moonrise locations in Mount Maunganui

Full moon rising over the ocean at Mount Maunganui with surfer carrying board at sunrise twilight

Between October and May the full moon rises over the ocean at the Mount, often appearing surprisingly large from sea level viewpoints.

Moonrise here is surprisingly predictable once you know where to stand. I almost always photograph it from sea level rather than elevation because foreground detail makes a huge difference to the final image.

Between October and May, the full moon rises over the ocean, which I never tire of watching as it rises into pastel pink skies.

Main Beach

Best for: clean horizon moonrise alignments

About: Main Beach is the most reliable place to photograph moonrise at the Mount. The view across the Pacific makes it easy to track where the moon will appear along the horizon and there’s lots of rocks and islands for creating visual interest.

Between October and May, the full moon rises straight ahead over the ocean from this stretch of coastline. From June through September, it shifts further south and rises over the Maketū Peninsula instead, which means you’ll be looking back down the beach rather than straight out to sea.

Accessibility: Very easy, parking nearby on the roadside.

Best time of year: October through May strongest alignments

Local tip: Arrive early enough to choose your foreground before the moon appears. It rises faster than most people expect.

Moturiki Island

Best for: moonrise with foreground texture

About: Moturiki’s outer rocks create some of the strongest moonrise compositions locally, especially when the moon lifts over Maketū Peninsula during the cooler months. I usually shoot from the rocks near the start of the island so I can include both coastline direction and horizon alignment in the frame.

Accessibility: Short easy walk

Best time of year: May through September

Local tip: This is one of the few places locally where moonrise foregrounds feel naturally layered rather than minimal.

Seasonal difference locals notice

Some of the most dramatic sunrise colour in Mount Maunganui actually happens outside summer.

Autumn and winter usually bring clearer horizons and deeper reds before sunrise. Cooler air helps reduce haze along the ocean edge, which makes colour feel sharper and more defined.

Autumn is especially reliable. Even when there’s cloud around, the sky often lights up about 20 minutes before sunrise.

Summer tends to produce softer pastel tones instead. Still beautiful, just different.

If you’re planning a sunrise shoot rather than a casual walk, winter mornings are often worth the earlier alarm.

Pastel sunrise reflections at Main Beach Mount Maunganui during autumn and winter morning light

Autumn and winter mornings at the Mount often bring clearer horizons and stronger colour before sunrise, this was taken in mid autumn on the main stretch of beach along the coast.

Quiet sunrise locations without crowds

If you’re looking for a quieter sunrise experience, head south along Oceanbeach Road and choose any residential beach entrance instead of surf club access points.

Most visitors stop near Main Beach or Tay Street. Driving just a few minutes further often means you’ll have long stretches of coastline almost to yourself.

Papamoa Domain is usually more than enough distance without needing to travel further down the coast.

Weekday mornings feel especially peaceful here.

Best sunrise locations for tripod photography

If you’re planning to shoot with a tripod, a few locations around the Mount are easier to work from than soft sand.

Some of my usual options include:

  • the rocks around Moturiki

  • the Clyde Street boardwalk

  • grass edges above Tay Street Beach

That said, most sunrise photography at the Mount still happens directly on the sand. Low tide reflections are often worth the trade-off.

Look for firm ground near beach access tracks, boardwalk edges, or rock platforms for more stable sunrise tripod setups.

The best sunrise view at the Mount (in my opinion)

Some of my favourite sunrises at the Mount actually happen from the water.

Heading out for an early swim or surf often means you get a completely uninterrupted view of the sun as it rises above the horizon line of the Pacific Ocean. I like to call this a front row seat to sunrise'. There’s something special about watching the pre sunrise colour cast across the sky from sea level before the beach fills up. Even on calm mornings without waves, just floating on your back or paddling out on a longboard gives you a completely different perspective on the coastline.

It’s one of the perspectives that completely changed how I photograph sunrise here. I ended up making a limited edition print from one calm morning offshore when the first light wrapped around Mauao. View the Mauao sunrise print.

The wrap up

Some mornings at the Mount are quiet and pastel. Others arrive glowing red before the sun even appears. That unpredictability is part of what keeps me coming back again and again.

I hope you enjoyed this guide. Let me know where you end up going, I’d love to know!
